ALERT - December 4, 2006:  Protect Our Woods joins allies to submit a response to the Draft Supplement to the Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) for the German Ridge Restoration Project in Hoosier National Forest

31. HNF Plan Management Areas

The HNF Plan lays out Management Area prescriptions. As we pointed out in our appeal of the HNF Plan, the Management Area prescriptions do not specify the number of acres for logging and burning in each Management Area.

This makes it impossible for the public to assess on a project level, whether the Forest Service cuts too much in a Management Area. It therefore reduces transparency. Please refer to our Hoosier LRMP appeal comments for more details on this point.

Our question is: At what point does the Forest Service “know” when they are logging “enough” to meet the Management Prescriptions of each particular Management Area? When is the logging on a project going to put the Forest Service over the “limit?” Can the Forest Service then issue endless timber sale plans in Management Area 2.8? With this Project EIS, we can see that the vagueness about this issue in the Hoosier LRMP is already causing problems.
